The Founding Of New Home

In 1860, William Barker and Andrew J. Clark began producing the "New England Single Thread Hand Sewing Machine" in Orange, Massachusetts. Over the next 20 years, the New England machine and the "Home Shuttle" were their two most significant products. In 1882, the company reformed under the name New Home (a combination of the labels New England and Home Shuttle), and it continued to operate under that name for the better part of a century. In 1960, ninety-three years after Barker and Clark first collaborated, New Home and the "New Home" brand were purchased by the Janome Sewing Machine Company of Tokyo, Japan.

Janome Begins

In Japanese, the word Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me) means "eye of the snake." The company earned the name in the 1920s when founder Yosaku Ose, a pioneer in Japanese sewing manufacturing, began to use a round metal bobbin system instead of the traditional long shuttle. The Japanese thought the new round bobbin looked like a snake's eye, and from the innovative design, a name was born.

Janome has been leading the industry with such innovation ever since. The company now has sewing divisions in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand as well as agents in Africa, Central and South America and throughout the Pacific Rim of Asia.

The company's manufacturing prowess has also made it a world-leader in the production of high precision robots. In 1979, Janome technology introduced the world's first programmable, computer sewing machine - the MEMORY 7. Today, our Memory Craft computer models consistently stand out in the industry for their ease of use and precise stitch results. Janome products have been at the cutting edge of sewing technology since the earliest days of our founding.

Janome was the first to develop a computerized machine for home use (the Memory 7, in 1979), the first to offer professional style embroidery to the home market (the Memory Craft 8000, in 1990) and the first to offer a long-arm quilting machine for home use (the Memory Craft 6500P, in 2003). The long-arm quilting machine has also evolved to the fourth generation with the introduction of the Horizon Memory Craft 8900QCP, which features 11 inches of arm space, removable AcuFeed Flex dual feed, and a high resolution LCD touch screen with jog dial control.

Today, Janome's flagship model, the Horizon Memory Craft 15000, is redefining the way  sewists enjoy their hobby. This revolutionary machine is the first-ever wireless-enabled sewing machine. Sewists can now send designs or monitor stitch outs on their sewing machine using their iPad or PC. Janome also offers two thoughtful and functional iPad apps for embroidery: AcuMonitor and AcuEdit. AcuMonitor allows users to monitor their embroidery stitch outs in real time, while AcuEdit offers the complete MC15000 embroidery editing suite for the ipad.  This, in addition to a true 9mm stitch width, Variable Zigzag, the Linear Motion Embroidery System, and many more features make this the most powerful, yet effortless sewing, quilting and embroidery machine available.

Janome's mission is to produce machines which inspire creativity and innovation, yet are simple to use. Janome knows the most important thing about our products is not the machines themselves, but what you create with them. The better your tools, the more inventive, artistic and pleasurable your sewing experience. That’s why we design our machines for performance, but also for comfort, quality, and intuitive ease of operation.< As a leader in the sewing industry, Janome keeps striving to provide best-in-class products and services which enable sewists' creativity and innvovation. Janome America creates products to inspire, not intimidate—because the most important function Janome machines perform is to set free your creativity.
