In all facet of our lives, we find tools that help us express our creative genius, whether that genius be in housing construction, computer programming, or culinary arts, just to name a few! And sewing arts are no exception. In fact, the development that has occurred in every aspect of sewing over the past 15 years is absolutely remarkable! Folks who sew are enjoying sewing technology that our great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers could not even imagine!
We at Sewing Arts Center know there is the right tool for the right sewing project! (Of course you could try to carve a steak with a spoon, but would you?) What you probably don’t know is that before selling ANY product at Sewing Arts Center, from a needle or thread to an embroidery and sewing machine, each product is tested by the staff and select customers for quality and function. When a product passes our internal tests without flaw and is deemed to serve the needs of our sewing community, then and only then do we make arrangements to make the product available to you. We guarantee to you that every product we sell to you will serve in the manner promised.
Who in the world does that anymore? (Oh…that’s right! Sewing Arts Center does!)
OK. I really, really want a good sewing machine. What now?
Purchasing a sewing machine is an investment – in your creativity and your pocketbook. Whether you’re just beginning or have been sewing for years, before you set about looking at new sewing machines, determine what kind of sewing you’re interested in doing. Once you’re clear about whether you want to quilt, construct apparel, make items for your home, or assemble sails for your boat (or all of the above…), you can more easily determine what features to look for when making your sewing machine purchase.
When you begin looking, absolutely, look for durability, usability and stitch quality –
- Durable, because you don’t want to replace a sewing machine every couple of years, unless you’re trading up;
- User-friendly, because if it doesn’t make sense, you won’t use it, no matter how much you spent;
- Great stitch quality on all types and thickness of fabric, because you never know when you’ll be sewing awnings or silk charmeuse, and you want both of them to look as equally good.
Of course, ask a lot of questions of the sales person! Consider some of the following:
- What kind of sewing do you do? Find out the sales person’s sewing background. You’ll be on your way to building a wonderful relationship with your sewing machine dealer if you are confident in the staff. You wouldn’t have a chef put a roof on your house (unless, of course, the chef was a roofer, too!) Make certain to purchase a sewing machine from someone who sews. (Our repair people as well as our sales staff are all people who sew – a pre-requisite for employment with
Sewing Arts Center.)
- What are this machine’s outstanding features? Why do you like this machine? By asking this, you can find out whether or not your interests and the sales person’s are in concert. Where is it manufactured? (Husqvarna Viking sewing machines are quality-built in Sweden, HandiQuilter quilting machines are expertly made in Utah and both brands are confidently and proudly represented at Sewing Arts Center.)
- Show me the buttonhole! Even if you never plan to sew a buttonhole, the creation of it is one of the most difficult tasks for a machine to perform superbly, and it will give you an idea of how well the machine will handle other tasks.
- May I sew on the machine? Actually don’t ask this question – insist upon sitting down in front of the sewing machine and sewing on it – even if you’re a beginner. Ask to be shown how to thread the machine, how to wind and install the bobbin, how to adjust the thread tension and select the stitches, how to adjust the stitch length and width, how to lubricate the machine. Make sure the machine makes sense to you.
- What is the warranty period? What does it cover? If I need service, where is it performed? Are your repair people authorized by the machine manufacturers to provide repair? Do you offer an extended warranty? (We offer extended warranties free of charge on all of our Husqvarna Viking sewing and embroidery machines. This tells you that our confidence in our machines is outstanding, and that we stand behind our products 100%. In addition, our top-notch service technicians are authorized to repair all major brands, and all repairs are performed on-site!)
- Do you offer machine instruction classes? When? Do you have a classroom on site? Do you offer any other sewing classes?
(Sewing Arts Center offers machine instruction classes on a monthly basis to our patrons free of charge for as long as our customers own their sewing machines. And you’re always welcome to call if you get stuck. 99% of the time we can assist you over the telephone. In addition to our sewing and embroidery machine and software classes, we offer an extensive selection of sewing classes, tailor-made for you.
