Enrollment Policy

Thank you for your support of Sewing Arts Center. We truly appreciate your confidence in us, and enjoy providing you with creative opportunities to express your sewing genius! We take our educational obligations to you very seriously. So, please familiarize yourself with the Enrollment Policy, as it is non-negotiable.

Class fees are required at the time of registration. Phone reservations are accepted with credit card payment. If you withdraw from a class, a store credit (NO REFUNDS) will only be given with your minimum 5-day notice prior to the first class date. Without this minimum notice, under no circumstance are store credits or transfers made.

We reserve the right to cancel classes as may become necessary, at which time a refund or store credit will be issued. Sewing Arts Centers will do its best to notify students of a cancellation at least 3 days prior to the class date.

Make-up classes are given only in the event the instructor misses a class.

Unless otherwise noted in the class description, class fees do not include materials. When you register, be certain to get a supply list, available in person or on our website.

Please make arrangements for childcare well in advance of your class dates.

Cell phone use is not permitted in the classrooms.

As a courtesy to those with sensitivities and allergies to colognes and perfumes, please refrain from using them when enrolled in a class.

How to Register for Classes

Class registration and enrollment are on a first come, first served basis. As our classes are limited in size in most circumstances to 12 or fewer students, classes fill very quickly.

You will serve yourself well and be on your way to expressing your zeal for sewing even more quickly if you enroll early. We are happy to “wait list” you for a class if you miss an opportunity to enroll in a class, but it is unusual for openings to occur. So please enroll early to avoid disappointment – yours and ours! (We want you in class, kiddo! You could be sewing!)

You’ll notice that all of our sewing instruction classes are “leveled” in order for you to more easily assess the level of experience required for each class. If you’ve been wondering what class is right for you, the following will provide the road map. If you have any questions about your level expertise and whether a class is appropriate for your level of skill, please do give us a call.

Please note that some of our classes have pre-requisites for enrollment. Much like a university environment, some of our coursework builds upon the instruction provided in the pre-requisite course. Pre-requisite coursework is important in these circumstances, and are not waived.

 Level 1 (Beginner)

Let's face it, you know absolutely nothing or remember very little about sewing or quilting. You may have taken a Home-Economics class back in Junior High, but when someone asks, "How often do you change the needle in your sewing machine?" you say to yourself, "I didn't know you could change the needle." (Another question: Do you hold your breath while cutting and sewing?) These classes are great opportunities to "fill in all those sewing blanks."

 Level 2 (Advanced Beginner)

You're fairly certain you can cut out a pattern or use a rotary cutter and sew a 1/4 inch seam. You can rattle off what needle to use with what fabric and can regurgitate what stitch length, too (though you still might not really understand why these things are important!) You can get along fairly well, but still need some help ironing out the intimidation, and only really panic 3/4?s of the time. As a quilter, you?ve assembled one or two quilts, and are starting to think about how much fun it would be to cut not just squares of fabric but triangles, too!

 Level 3 (Intermediate)

You're feeling pretty confident (and pretty, too) and think you can conquer the world. You're ready to put darts and princess seams in your garment, ready to manipulate your patterns to fit, really, and absolutely have a hankering for expressing yourself more stylishly. If you're a quilter, you can piece and appliqué simple blocks and designs. Putting on borders and miters pose no threat. You can set blocks straight, on point and sashed. You understand what it means to set blocks straight, on point, and sashed. You are beginning to be able to break down patterns into units. You can piece and bind and finish a quilt. You call yourself a quilter! Listen to you roar!

 Level 4 (Advanced)

Little intimidates you, and even if it did, you'd try it. And you'd do it in muslin first to work out the bugs before daring to destroy your $60/yard fashion fabric. You manipulate your own patterns and are fairly confident of your abilities, but still enjoy the assistance of the instructor, though you really don't need his or her help. And you can talk and sew at the same time!

 Level 5 (Transcendental)

Having transcended all limitations, you sew for others not only because you?re a fantastic caregiver and you must, but because you?re really good. Adjusting and manipulating darts and seam lines, linings and jackets and fitted gowns are your specialty. And you really enjoy a good challenge! Not only can you read a pattern and create a garment, but you can also teach others how to do it! (Would you be interested in some part-time employment?)
