The Right Tool for the Right Job

In all facet of our lives, we find tools that help us express our creative genius, whether that genius be in housing construction, computer programming, or culinary arts, just to name a few! And sewing arts are no exception. In fact, the development that has occurred in every aspect of sewing over the past 15 years is absolutely remarkable! Folks who sew are enjoying sewing technology that our great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers could not even imagine!

We at Sewing Arts Center know there is the right tool for the right sewing project! (Of course you could try to carve a steak with a spoon, but would you?) What you probably don’t know is that before selling ANY product at Sewing Arts Center, from a needle or thread to an embroidery and sewing machine, each product is tested by the staff and select customers for quality and function. When a product passes our internal tests without flaw and is deemed to serve the needs of our sewing community, then and only then do we make arrangements to make the product available to you. We guarantee to you that every product we sell to you will serve in the manner promised.

OK. I really, really want a good sewing machine. What now?

Purchasing a sewing machine is an investment – in your creativity and your pocketbook. Whether you’re just beginning or have been sewing for years, before you set about looking at new sewing machines, determine what kind of sewing you’re interested in doing. Once you’re clear about whether you want to quilt, construct apparel, make items for your home, or assemble sails for your boat (or all of the above…), you can more easily determine what features to look for when making your sewing machine purchase.

When you begin looking, look for:

Durability. You want to make certain your machine can handle the riggers you put it through! Many people come in to Sewing Arts Center first indicating they want to do "easy" projects. But easy doesn't necessarily translate to easy on the machine! Simply stitching things together with straight stitch certainly seams straight forward. But there'sa remarkable difference in a machine's ability to manage light weight cotton fabrics and layers of denim, canvas, vinyl or leather!

Stitch Quality. Be certain the machine you purchase provides great stitch quality on all types and thicknesses of fabric. You never know when you’ll be sewing awnings or silk charmeuse, and you want both of them to look equally good.

Ease of Use. If your machine proves not to be user-friendly or not to be able to accommodate the types of fabric you want to sew, you won’t use it, no matter how much you spent, no matter how durable or how fabulous the stitch quality.

The Test Drive

When you are ready to purchase a machine, make certain you take it for a test drive. It's the only way to determine whether or not it's a good fit for you. You might even consider taking some of your own fabrics with you so that you can check the quality of stitch on your fabrics. Be clear with the sales person about your sewing interests and what you hope to be able to make. And be frank about your budget. Sewing machines have a huge variation in price point, from hand-held $19.95 battery operated "As Seen on TV" models all the way to $15,000.00! At Sewing Arts we have sewing machines that range in price from $129.00 to $15000.00. Of course, it's fabulous when you walk in the door and say "I'll take the top of the line, please." But it's most important that you go home with the machine that is right for you.

We hope that you find this information helpful. Please don’t hesitate to call upon us when we can be of further assistance.

Prodigy Quilting Machines

Sewing Arts Center is absolutely thrilled to the gills to be the first retail shop on the west coast to represent Prodigy Quilting Machines!

Whether you're a novice or advanced, starting a business of your own or simply finishing quilts for your kids or grandkids, Prodigy quilting machines has a quilting machine and a frame with your name on it! Have Prodigy quilting equipment build just for YOU!

If you didn't know, Prodigy is THE quilting machine for Sharon Schamber. When Russell Scott Conte, owner of Sewing Arts Center, was pondering his personal quilting machine choices, he looked at bunches, drove bunches, then called Sharon. She told him to buy a Prodigy Quilter sight unseen. That didn't go over really well. But Sharon is THE authority, so he bought one...sight unseen. It is now HIS quilting machine bar none! (OMG! Talk about quilting heaven...slight editorial bump...)

Follows a personal note from Charlie Presler, president of Prodigy Machine Corp. and inventor of the stitch regulator and the Prodigy Quilter (by the way, he's a really great guy!):

"From our beginning in 1994, and our introduction of the Prodigy Quilter in 1996, Prodigy Machine Corp. has blossomed into a leading manufacturer and supplier of high technology equipment for the home textiles industry. Prodigy's extensive product line ensures its machinery is used in all facets of the home textile industry. Over the years, our products have earned their excellent reputation through proven reliability and low maintenance requirements while yielding high quality production and a strong emphasis on operator safety. We offer our customers a stock inventory of replacement parts. Best of all, our staff of technicians are only a phone call away to ensure excellent customer service before, during, and after your purchase. We pride ourselves on the fact that we build the simplest machinery to do the best job in the least amount of time with the fewest problems.

Over the past few years we have had our wonderful machine duplicated by several other manufacturers. They have not built their pirated machines to the high standards that we do here at Prodigy. I would ask you to be very careful and be sure of what you are buying before spending your hard earned money on these duplicates. Just remember that we built them first and foremost to enable you to get a great machine at a fair price, and make a little money for ourselves too. We designed our baby from scratch to accomplish something no other manufacturer could do then, nor can do now, and that is to give you the best and most accurate stitching available, the best machine available, and the best customer support available. And if that isn't enough, our machines are engineered and manufactured in the greatest country in the world, the United States of America. I just don't care if we can earn more by having them built overseas, I am going to keep our people employed by building them right here. Period.

So I ask you, wouldn't it be wise to have the original and the best by acquiring a Prodigy. You just can't go wrong.

Something to ponder: Remember when you drove all the way to the hardware store to have a key duplicated. The person copied the key, inspected it thoroughly, compared it to the original and then handed it back saying "that should work." After getting all the way back home, you found out it wouldn't open the lock. But the key guy said it was the same. Just remember, certain engineered tolerances just can't be duplicated if you don't know what to look for in the first place. Why take the chance? Prodigy Quilting machines are built for YOU by US - a partnership founded equally by passions for quilting and engineering. Thanks for considering Prodigy Quilting Machines."

Bring quilting nirvana home! Come see Russell at Sewing Arts Center and take the Prodigy Quilter for a test drive. You'll see why the quilting world is just giddy about Prodigy Quilting Machines!
